Mangles used for smoothing linen were mostly given to the lovers as presents, that is why they show a very rich system of motifs, and a variety of carving techniques. “Csigacsináló borda” (ribbed wooden boards) and the corresponding “pederítő”(wooden stick for rolling pastry) were widely used from the middle of the 19th century, they functioned as tools for preparing the traditional “csigatészta” (small rolled shell-shaped pastry for soups). In Hajdúság these wooden tools were made mostly by turners, but neat-handed peasants also managed to carve similar ones.
